5-6 Developmental League Rules

  • Players will be thrown 5 pitches by their coach from 30 feet away. Pitches can be overhand or underhand. Additional pitches will be thrown if the last pitch is fouled. Coaches must stay inside the pitching circle when throwing to players.
  • If a player fails to put a thrown ball into play, a ball will be placed on a tee to hit. Players will be out if they miss the ball after one swing off the tee. Additional swings will be given if the ball is hit in foul territory off the tee.
  • No stealing is allowed. Players must remain on the base until a batter makes contact with the ball.
  • Runners may advance additional bases on a ball hit to the outfield. The ball is dead once a defensive player gains control of the ball on the infield in fair territory when the ball is hit to the outfield. Players cannot advance on an overthrow to first base.
  • Runners are given the next base if they are across the halfway mark between bases once the ball is dead. Runners will go back to the previous base if they don’t make it to the halfway mark. Runners can only advance one base on a ball hit to the infield.
  • A half inning is over once a defensive team gains 3 outs or the offensive team scores 5 runs. The last inning will be open until a defensive team gains 3 outs or bats their entire lineup. An open inning is when a team is allowed to score more than 5 runs.
  • A regulation tee ball will be used.
  • A maximum of 10 defensive players are allowed on the field. There will be no catcher. There will be two pitchers and 4 outfielders. All players on the roster will bat.
  • Coaches are encouraged to rotate defensive players every inning. No player will sit the bench more than two consecutive innings.
  • The infield fly rule will not be enforced.
  • Each game will be 4 innings or an hour in duration. No new inning will start after the 60 minute mark. You will finish an inning already started after time expires.
  • The team with the most runs at the end of the game wins. Regular season games can end in a tie.
  • The home team coaches will chalk the lines and prepare the field for play.
  • Bats must be USA or USSSA Certified Tee-Ball.
  • Coaches and players will abide by the EYS Code of Conduct.
  • Physical violence towards another coach, official, fan, or player will not be tolerated. The guilty party will immediately be suspended for the season.
  • Coaches and players will refrain from using profanity directed toward any party on or off the court/field. Coaches or players who use profanity directed towards other coaches or officials will be suspended for one game and have to meet with the EYS Executive Board.
  • Players who intentionally try to hurt or injure another player will immediately be suspended from the game under the official’s discretion. Players who violate this rule will be suspended for one game and have to meet with the EYS Executive Board.
  • Coaches will demonstrate good sportsmanship and fair play at all times.
  • Coaches and players will shake hands at the end of play.
  • Coaches and players are responsible for picking trash and their belongings after each game.
