The Bats nickname honors the Louisville Bats, a Triple-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds based in Louisville, Kentucky. The Bats were founded in 1982 as the Louisville Redbirds, but they were rebranded as the RiverBats in 1999. The name was shortened to just “Bats” in 2002. Surprisingly, the Bats’ name has nothing to do with the Louisville Slugger brand of the Hillerich & Bradsby Co., which has been producing baseball bats in the city since 1855. H&B sold the brand to Wilson Sporting Goods in 2015 but still produces bats with the same name.

If you get the opportunity to travel to Louisville, don’t miss the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, a great time for the entire family.

The Bats are one of only three teams to be represented in every baseball league at EYS.
