The Grasshoppers are named after the Greensboro Grasshoppers, a High-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates of the South Atlantic League. The team itself has existed since 1902 and has been known by a host of monikers, including the Farmers, Champs, Patriots, Red Sox, Yankees, Hornets, and Bats. The organization took on the Grasshoppers nickname in 2005 and has been known as such ever since.

In 2009, the Grasshoppers saw a baseball first when their team dog, Master Yogi Berra, became the first dog ever ejected from a professional baseball game for “leaving a mess in the outfield.” The logo’s actual name is “Guilford,” so-named based on the name of the country in which the city of Greensboro is located.

The Grasshoppers are part of EYS’ Co-ed, Developmental, and Rookie leagues.
