The EYS TinCaps honor the Fort Wayne TinCaps, the High-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres. The TinCaps are named in reference to pioneer and folk legend John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed, who allegedly wandered through Indiana, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, and Ontario, Canada. He is said to have introduced apple trees to the region, and legend had it he would keep a tin pot on his head as a hat.

Chapman is said to be buried in Fort Wayne, and the Johnny Appleseed Festival has been held in the city since 1975.

The TinCaps are part of EYS' Co-ed, Developmental, and Rookie leagues.
