The Timber Rattlers are named in honor of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers of Grand Chute, Wisconsin, a High-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. The team has its origins in 1958 when it was founded as part of the now-defunct Three-I League and was known as the Fox City Foxes. They became known as the Appleton Foxes in 1967, and they changed their name to the Timber Rattlers in 1995.

The name was made for exactly the reason they landed on the EYS roster of teams—to boost the appeal outside of the region. The moniker “Timber Rattlers” was selected by area school children, who simply liked the logo. By the way, timber rattlesnakes are not found in the Grand Chute area, but they are common in southwest Wisconsin. Their primary mascot—the snake that makes its appearance on the logo—is named Fang. There also is a secondary mascot named Whiffer.

The Timber Rattlers are part of the Co-ed, Developmental, Rookie, and Minor leagues at EYS.
